Betta fish or Siamese Fighting Fish are a native species in Southeast Asia. They swim happily in rice paddies and canals feeding on insect larvae.
As their alternate name suggests, Betta fish will fight each other. Male Bettas are quite territorial and will have brief spars with other males. However, modern Bettas are bred for aggression. When they feel threatened by another fish, Bettas will flare up as demonstrated to the right by Jasper.
The beautiful colors that Bettas are known for only occur in the wild when the fish is provoked. Over the years, breeders have developed a wide variety of colors and tail fins, such as the veil tail and the crown-tail.
